Storage Tips for Choosing the Right Storage Option For You

There are many reasons people have a need for short-term or long-term storage, such as:

  • Decluttering a house before putting it on the market for sale
  • Downsizing to a smaller home
  • Remodeling
  • In between houses
  • Need more space

Below are some items to consider:

  1. Determine Size:  Make a list of items that you know you are going to need to store. Use this handy space estimator to pick the right size storage space.
  2. Reserve Unit:  If you are decluttering your house to prepare it for sale, reserve your storage unit well in advance, especially during the peak summer moving season.
  3. Climate Control:  When storing items that are temperature sensitive, rent a storage unit that is temperature controlled. This is the best way to ensure that your items will be stored safely.
  4. What to Store:  If there are particular pieces of furniture that you are planning on using later, store them. If there are pieces of furniture that do not match the décor of your new home, but you are not ready to let go of them, use storage for safe keeping. It is important to note that there are public storage restrictions, such as not storing hazardous materials, perishable food, plants, items you do not legally own, weapons, scented or damp items.
  5. Insure Items: If placing valuable items in a storage unit, such as antiques or large pieces of furniture, insure the items. This extra step can save you money if anything were to happen to your items during storage or transport.
