Moving Tips: How to Label Your Moving Boxes Like a Pro

Moving to a new home is stressful.  Unpacking moving boxes that are not labeled or labeled incorrectly can make the process even more of a headache! Labeling can be time-consuming, but the extra step saves a significant amount of time and frustration. Utilize these tips to help make your move as smooth as possible:

  1. Colorful Labels: Assign each room in your house to a specific colored label. Place the coordinated color label on the top and on at least three sides of the box. On moving day, place the corresponding sticker on the doors of each room so that the movers know exactly where to put the boxes.
  2. Take Inventory: Create a master list. After labeling, ensure that each box is accounted for on the master inventory list. That way, if a box is missing, you will be able to identify which box and what contents are missing. The inventory list should have the box number, room assignment, and a description of the contents.
  3. Label, Always: If you cannot create a master inventory list because of time constraints, use a waterproof marker (in case of rain!) to label each box, noting its contents directly on the box. When packing a moving box with fragile items, be sure to label the box, “fragile” on all sides. Learn more about how to best label boxes by reading our blog post:
  4. “Open First” and “First Night” Boxes: Pack a box labeled “Open First.” This box will contain all of the essentials including toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies, a screwdriver, dishes and silverware and a first aid kit. Each person in your household should also have a box labeled “First Night” packed with the essentials for a first night’s stay such as sleepwear and any medications.
